Beijing Commune is delighted to participate in Art Basel Hong Kong 2024 at Booth 1B14, showcasing works by Liang Yuanwei, Ma Qiusha, Wang Guangle, Wang Luyan, Xie Molin, Yang Xinguang, Zhou Yilun, etc.
Specifically, Zhou Yilun will present his solo project Shelter at the Kabinett sector in our booth, which is a site-specific installation that incorporates paintings, found objects, handmade furniture, and sculptures. The space is precariously structured by arrays of paintings on three sides and canopied by a flimsy canvas. The paintings on display exemplify his signature parodies that appropriate popular culture images at his fingertips, as well as his unique interaction with symbols and images incursive into every aspect of contemporary life: with mottled paint, blurred figures, central compositions, Zhou's destruction of superfluous things—whether images or objects—hints at a new "redundancy." The self-reflection of artwork and artmaking disrupts the order between the viewer and the works. With sculptural furniture made of salvaged materials in the middle of the room, the artist builds a seemingly habitable space yet on the brink of destruction. Through coalescing the gallery room and shelter, Zhou reexamines the redundant and the temporal and embraces the uncertainty that ferments.
