A distinguished household name, Singaporean artist Suzann Victor will debut her latest sculpture at the fair. Made of crushed stained glass, the life-sized ‘Angel’ forms a beautiful embodiment of the commercialization of religious iconography. Victor’s compatriot, sculptor Jason Lim, will also be showing compelling new works at Gajah’s booth. Showcasing regional talent, Indonesian Mangu Putra has created a breath-taking diptych in continuation of his ‘Wilderness’ series, which transports the viewer into the heart of a dense, entangled forest. Bali-based American artist Ashley Bickerton will show his latest work, ‘Kid 3’, for the first time in Indonesia. This captivating work comes from his latest series of intimate portraits, which frame a single character amidst an array of symbolic and anthropological references.
As the paragon dealer of South East Asian art, Gajah Gallery will present some of the most established names from the region, bringing together artists Ashley Bickerton (US), Abdi Setiawan (ID), Handiwirman Saputra (ID), Jason Lim (SG), Kumari Nahappan (SG), Li Jin (CN), Mangu Putra (ID), Rudi Mantofani (ID), Sabri Idrus (MY), Suzann Victor (SG), Ugo Untoro (ID),Wei Ligang (CN), and Yunizar (ID)
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Ashley Bickerton is a maverick in the contemporary South East Asian art scene. For over 20 years, the artist has focused his attention on the exotification and commodification of culture, assembling beautifully grotesque compositions that expose the affectations of modern culture through the portrayal of female bodies.
Abdi Setiawan’s works take on a particularly cynical representation of modern Indonesian life. Sympathetic towards marginalized figures such as sex workers, transvestites, buskers and becak drivers, Abdi expresses conflicts of the human condition through human figures and the rich nimbus of supporting elements that accompany their existence.
Handiwirman Saputra structures ordinary objects and materials in innovative ways, framing his perception of simple beauty. His installations are formed to invite associations with familiar shapes, yet remain purposely ambiguous, avoiding conclusive readings.
