On the occasion of the DC Open, SETAREH X is pleased to announce the first solo exhibition with Kate Andrews. The title of the exhibition equivalents ties in with the photo series of cloud formations of the same name (1925–1934) by Alfred Stieglitz, which express not only the visible surface of things but also the emotions and inner state of the artist.
Kate Andrews uses a wide variety of processes in her artistic practice, such as refined oil painting, detailed and differentiated drawings as well as sculptural arrangements with which she carefully extends her work into the surrounding space. Andrews' sensitive images shift between concrete and ephemeral, between material and atmospheric. Besides the compositorial clarity, there consistantly remains an aspect that cannot be entirely resolved when observing these works. In addition to reminiscences of photography and references to digital imagery, her nuanced paintings and drawings primarily convey moods and exceptional colour impressions.
Her virtuously and precisely executed oil paintings potentially recall long exposures while areas of canvas left blank–which subtly frame the painting surface–may remind of polaroid photography or windows within image editing programmes. In this way, the artist ultimately also questions the conditions of painted images in themselves. Again and again, allusive forms emerge in Kate Andrews' works that refuse to be defined within the framework of a fixed figure or meaning. This open, temporary and fluid character is an essential aspect of the works by the young Canadian artist.
Kate Andrews (b. 1992 in Toronto, Canada) lives and works in Bremen. She studied at Concordia University and at the University of Guelph in Canada. From 2016 to 2020 she attended the Hochschule für Künste in Bremen and graduated as a 'Meisterschülerin' of Stephan Baum- kötter.
