Alun Leach-Jones Biography

In 1966 Leach–Jones achieved national prominence in Australia with his Noumenon series of abstract sculptures which distinguished him as a leading contemporary Australian artist. Exhibiting the Noumenon series nationally and internationally to great acclaim, Leach-Jones also expanded his oeuvre and began to transform the motifs and imagery of these works into prints and paintings, demonstrating his skill in a variety of media.

His work was included in the survey exhibition of contemporary abstraction, The Field, at the National Gallery of Victoria in 1968, and is characterised by a treatment of boldly coloured symbols and evocative biomorphic forms that are dynamic and confident, realised with an attention to detail, vibrant colours and active compositions.

Alun Leach-Jones arrived in Australia in 1960, attending the South Australian School of Art in Adelaide, after studying at the Liverpool College of Arts from 1957 to 1959. The artist has held over 70 solo shows throughout Europe, Australia and Japan. Leach-Jones’ work is held nationally and internationally in the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum , London and the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney.
