Well known for his abstract tonal paintings, which have over several decades explored the interplay of forms interacting with each other, his work is partly informed by his training and interest in classical musical composition.  In 2011 Fonseca began distilling his vision and approach to painting, which resulted in a series of boldly minimal paintings, with black and white predominating.

Caio Fonseca’s paintings have been exhibited internationally in both museums and galleries. His work was presented in retrospectives at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. in 2004 and at the Institut Valencià d'Art Modern (IVAM), in Valencia, Spain in 2003. Fonseca’s paintings are in public and private collections throughout Europe and the United States, including those of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C. and in New York’s Whitney Museum of American Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and The Museum of Modern Art in New York.
