Graduate from the Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts, Ma Ke adopts a minimal approach to painting, provoking a reaction from the viewer’s part and stressing the visual power of his technique. Ma Ke tries to convert his obsession by means of concrete expressive forms. His forms are nonetheless a way to pursue a kind of spiritual elevation, and become a tool through which he shares his reflections on the act of painting and its meaning. His paintings capture the tension of a controlled expressiveness. Ma Ke has absorbed painting techniques rooted in Western tradition and infused with characteristics peculiar to Chinese painting. This juxtaposition of both styles is not an infusion in the conventional sense but a painting technique that has been considered carefully by the artist and it ultimately serves to convey his response to it.
