Rosa Loy Biography

She has a particular interest in traditional conceptions of women, femininity. Her approach presents privately but more strongly the feministic element at the forefront. Women are depicted as the subject that helps female is another female being, the pursuit of beauty is self-satisfactory, and she is depicted as the principal agent of labor and active pioneer. Women who look like twins or reflective another self of each other imply Loy’s longing for the solidarity of women who support each other to build an ideal society in her works. Loy uses paint containing casein, the main protein component of milk, instead of oil or acrylic paint. Due to its appealing hue and a high degree of preservability, casein was widely used in ancient fresco paintings whereas in the present era, the development of acrylic and oil pigments led the frequency of its usage to decrease. However, this unique medium fascinated Loy; consequently, she attains her magical style of painting by producing and proficiently applying her own pure colors without additives.

Rosa Loy lives and works in Leipzig.  She studied horticulture at Humboldt University Berlin and completed her BFA and MFA at the Academy of Visual Art in Leipzig. She has participated in numerous exhibitions on international art museums including Museum der Stadt Bensheim (2020), Gutshaus Steglitz (2019) in Berlin, Pinakothek der Moderne (2019) in Munich, Drents Museum (2017) in Assen, Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz (2012), Fondazione Coppola (2019) in Vicenza, Space K (2021) in Seoul. Her works are included in the collection of major art institutions and organizations such as MoMA, MoCA in USA, Pinakothek der Moderne, Museum der bildenden Künste Leipzig, Deutsche Bank in Germany, Busan Museum of Art in Korea.
