Christopher Page's Interior, Fading Light (2021) appears to reflect the sunlight glowing through the panelled window of Ben Hunter, a gallery in London.
On closer inspection you'll notice the painting is not framed, but entirely flat—painted directly onto the canvas.
Through subtle variations of light, Page's canvases—masquerading as three-dimensional and multi-textured plains—are striking evocations of the ancient 'trompe l'oeil' technique, in a bid to reimagine pictorial and architectural space.
Christopher Page, who received his MFA from Yale School of Art in 2011, is the subject of a solo exhibition entitled Shadows & Reflections at Ben Hunter, running until 11 November.
