Gisela McDaniel's strikingly vibrant portraits glowed through the windows of Pilar Corrias' Savile Row space as we entered the show's preview on Thursday.
For this series of intimate portraits, McDaniel focused on capturing diasporic Chamorro women, an indigenous community of the Mariana Islands in the north-western Pacific, of which the artist herself is descendent.
The colours she uses are extraordinary, with luminous yellows and pinks seeping through each figure. Each canvas is adorned with meaningful objects to the sitters—such as a gold earring, a conch shell, or a bauble—that have been wrapped around the edge of the canvases, becoming part of each composition.
Manhaga Fu'una (Fu'una's Daughters) is on view until 26 February.
