The intense, lucid colours of Huang Yuxing have been muted for a special exhibition showcasing his drawings at Almine Rech in Shanghai.

The exhibition features monochromatic drawings depicting natural landscapes of rocky, pine tree-lined horizons. Huang's use of thick, curved lines and deep shading makes for a series of compelling compositions that starkly contrast against the artist's previous colour-filled work.

In Pine I (2022), Huang uses Gongbi, a Chinese realist technique that employs thin lines to meticulously outline desired subjects. Recalling the contour lines present in topographic maps, Huang's drawings are delicate and mesmeric surveys of nature.

Almine Rech announced representation of Huang in November 2020, and simultaneously with this Shanghai show, the artist's work is also debuting in New York with a show at Almine Rech's gallery space on 39 East 78th Street.

With a firm following in Asia—his work Enlightening (2016–18) fetched 1.1 million USD at Christie's Hong Kong in July 2020, and more recently Cherry Blossom Ravine (2019) smashed its high estimate at Christie's, selling for just under 7 million HKD—the New York showing offers U.S.-based audiences the opportunity to see what all the fuss is about.

Huang Yuxing (4 November–3 December 2022) is on view at Almine Rech Shanghai now until 3 December, and Huang Yuxing: An Absolute Power We Cannot Find (3 November–17 December 2022) is on view at Almine Rech New York until 17 December.
