Phillips' 20th Century & Contemporary Art sales on 29 and 30 June 2022 feature some stellar lots.
Among these, Anna Weyant's surrealistic portrayal of girlhood in Bath Time (2019), estimated between £80,000–120,000, borrows from Dutch Old Master painting to emphasise a distinctive, moody palette. Weyant recently joined Gagosian, becoming the youngest artist on the gallery's roster.
Salman Toor is another artist whose practice builds on the legacies of painting, referencing Old Dutch Master, Baroque, and Neo-Classical traditions to create affective reflections of his experience as a queer Pakistani man living in New York. Three Men with Trays (2018, estimated £250,000–350,000) is one among three lots by the artist.
A sculpture by Simone Leigh, representing the U.S. Pavilion at the 59th Venice Biennale, is also a highlight. Estimated between £800,000–1,200,000, Clarendon (2015) features a portrait of a Black woman with a crown of roses, rendered in terracotta, coloured porcelain, India ink, and epoxy.
Each measuring just under two metres, Philippe Parreno's set of colourful candles propped in a corner are another eye-catching inclusion, estimated at £200,000–300,000.
