From broken tiles to blistering paint, Sara Barker incorporates the materials of dilapidated interiors in her paintings, installations, and sculptures.

Her exhibition Sara Barker: Watch Movements (9 June–16 July 2023) takes place at Patricia Fleming Gallery in Glasgow. With the gallery currently undergoing renovation, the exhibition metamorphoses into a single, multifaceted artwork.

The Manchester-born artist utilises interstitial spaces like the voids left by missing tiles and rusting drains without covers.

Using mortar, paint, tinfoil, rubble, watercolour, and wood, Barker creates rugged sculptures, paintings, and spatial installations that embed themselves in the original construction of the Victorian building.

Interested in unearthing the past lives of the spaces around her, Barker creates a world that is both beautiful and broken.
