Jen DeNike is a New York based artist whose practice spans the media of dance, photography, sculpture, installation, video and collage. Concerned with American visual vernacular, DeNike’s performances, videos and installations are centred around the body as a platform from which the individual can engage with specific signs, symbols, adornments, rituals or movements.
Read MoreDeNike’s 2009 performance ‘Scrying’, held at MoMA, New York, takes the form of a non-narrative ballet. Transposing the traditionalism of ballet onto a contemporary art space, DeNike’s nuanced movement-based performance takes as its theme concepts of spectatorial gaze, introspection, reflection, gender and power.
DeNike has held solo exhibitions in Berlin, Zurich, Los Angeles, New York, Sao Paulo and Milan, and performed extensively at exhibitions and special events internationally. She has also collaborated widely and been involved in countless group exhibitions. Her work is in collection at the Museum of Modern Art, NY; Julia Stoschek Sammlung Collection, Düsseldorf, Germany; and Il Giardino dei Lauri Collection, Umbrio, Italy.
