Based in central Stockholm’s culturally rich Östermalm district, Andréhn-Schiptjenko is a leading Scandinavian contemporary art gallery. Working with an international roster of established and emerging contemporary artists, the gallery has been at the forefront of a new generation of Scandinavian galleries connected to the wider global art scene.
Read MoreEstablished in 1991 by gallerists Ciléne Andréhn and Marina Schiptjenko, Andréhn-Schiptjenko began in a small flat in Stockholm. The duo had previously worked together at the Arton A gallery, before its closing.
From the outset the focus of Andréhn-Schiptjenko was not just on presenting Swedish artists, but also introducing previously unknown artists from overseas. The gallery has given artists such as the French multi-media practitioner Xavier Veilhan and American sculptor Tony Matelli their first Scandinavian solo shows, creating lasting bonds. As one of the first galleries in Stockholm to present the work of an international selection of emerging artists, Andréhn-Schiptjenko paved the way for new international galleries opening in Sweden in the 1990s and beyond.
While bringing international artists to Scandinavia has been a big focus, Andréhn-Schiptjenko has also sought to present the work of established and emerging artists from the region. The gallery has launched the careers of several Scandinavian artists including painter Matts Leiderstam and master of ink wash Gunnel Wåhlstrand.
In 2007 Andréhn-Schiptjenko moved into a more conventional gallery space on Hudiksvallsgatan, in the middle of Stockholm’s art district. Continuing to grow in scale and influence, the gallery has bolstered its roster while establishing unique relationships with museums and collectors. The gallery also provides art advisory services on large-scale architectural and public projects.
In 2019 Andréhn-Schiptjenko relocated again to its current premises in Östermalm, opening with a solo exhibition of Matelli’s sculptures. That same year the gallery also opened a Paris project space in the art-rich 3rd arrondissement, the new space allowing for much closer connections to the international network the gallery has developed over the years.
