Arario Gallery is pleased to announce its participation in the Satellite Booths and Online Viewing Room section at Art Basel Hong Kong 2022, which will take place from 25 to 29 May 2022.
Welcoming onsite visitors through the Satellite Booth for the second time, Arario Gallery sheds light on artists such as CHOI Byung-so(b.1943) and KIM Soun-Gui(b.1946), the forerunners of Korean experimental art, and Filipino artist Buen CALUBAYAN(b. 1980).
For this year's Satellite Booth presentation, CHOI Byungso's Untitled, which was exhibited at Arario Museum Topdong Cinema in 2016, will be on view. Being part of the artist's most representative series, the presented work is made from newspapers that have been ruthlessly crumpled and torn along the grain. As the forerunner of Korean experimental art, CHOI participated in Korea's first contemporary art festival, DaeguContemporary Art Festival, in 1974 and inaugurated the experimental art association 35/128 with various leading figures from the event. Driven by his critical consciousness towards reality, the artist selected the most common and inexpensive materials to create his works. The erased surface of newspapers, symbolic of repression, demonstrates his resistance against society.
As a pioneer of Korea's contemporary experimental art, KIM Soun-Gui, who is scheduled to hold a solo exhibition at ZKM Center for Art and Media and participate in the 58th Carnegie International, has explored conceptual art and experimental performance since the late 1960s. Her wide range of medium includes drawings, multimedia, paintings, sound art, and videos, which bring together philosophy, art and technology. KIM's 'Saekdong' series is based on the five traditional colours—black, blue, red, white, and yellow, corresponding with the five cardinal directions, north, east, south, west, and centre—which stems from her long interest in visualising various factors of Eastern philosophy, such as the five elements of the universe, water, wood, fire, metal, and earth.
In addition, Buen CALUBAYAN, an artist who strives for self-verification in his works by investigating contradictions found within the concept of Filipino identity—introduces new landscape paintings that capture his exploration into the relationship between individuals and society for the first time.
For the Online Viewing Room, Torso (The Sculpture 14) by the sculptor GWON Osang, who is currently exhibiting at Suwon Museum of Art, Art Space Gwanggyo will be presented alongside works by the Chinese artist GAO Lei, who has been recognised by major international museums such as UCCA Center for Contemporary Art, Long Museum and Ludwig Museum. In addition, works by LIANG Manqi, a representative Chinese female abstract artist born in the 80s; HUANG Yuanqing, an abstract artist who—with years of experience in calligraphy— experiments with the expression of lines; and HAM, who explores self-consciousness in depth through the story of the 'Mad Rabbit', will be on view.
