Arario Gallery participates in Korea's most important art fair KIAF Seoul 2021 at COEX from 13 October until 17 October 2021. Arario Gallery's Booth presents a range of paintings, sculpture, photography and video work of Korean Avant-Garde masters and focuses on Women Avant-Garde artists' experimental art of the 1970s.
Artists and art works that have contributed to Korean contemporary art is shown, such as important video art by first generation Korean Avant-Garde artist KIM Kulim, who is scheduled for an upcoming joint exhibition at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Korea; 1970s-1980s paintings by KIM Soun-Gui, a pioneer of Korean contemporary experimental art; collage paintings by JUNG Kangja, who has made significant contributions to Korean contemporary art; 1960s photographs by first generation feminist female photographer PARK Youngsook; 1970s sculptural work by first generation abstract sculptor UM Taijung. KIM Kulim who has repeatedly experimented across various genres such as painting, sculpture, happenings, installation art, and land art, formed the Korean Avant-Garde Association (AG) in 1969 and established with JUNG Kangja, KANG Kukjin, JUNG Chanseung in 1970, which had a great influence on the expansion of Korean Avant-Garde and contemporary art. Since 1971, KIM Soungui has been pioneering new art that combines performance, video, installation and aesthetics by interacting with experimental artists in France. In 2019, she held a large scale retrospective exhibition Lazy Clouds at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul and her works are in collections of major world class museums such as the Centre Pompidou and Maison European de la Photography in France. JUNG Kangja tried to make voices in society through various formative experiments in the 1960s and 70s when the Korean military government and ideologies were in conflict. Her works which place a woman's body and sexuality at the center shows the dynamic relationship between gender ideology and gender politics and at that time had attracted considerable attention and her challenge to traditional ideas and resistance on the social system developed further in her experimental paintings. Sculptor UM Taijung who explores the materiality of iron, received the Prime Minister's Award at the 1967 National Exhibition and drew attention from the art world. He was noticed by Clare Lilley, a world renowned curator in the field of contemporary sculpture and the artist was selected as the only Korean artist to participate in Frieze Sculpture 2019.
Arario Gallery also showcases international artists such as Subodh GUPTA, a world-renowned artist who the gallery has worked with for over 20 years, and Kohei NAWA as well as experimental artists who are active both in Korea and abroad. In addition, for young collectors who have a growing interest in the art market and collecting art, will have the opportunity to look around a range of new works and major works by the gallery's representative emerging and young artists such as WON Seoung Won, KOO Kiyoon, LEE Jinju, NOH Sangho and JANG Jongwan.
