Ahn Changhong Biography

AHN Changhong, who is strengthening his position in the South Korean contemporary art history, has been putting a portrayal of modern history in Korea into art based upon records of individuals. Representing the phases of the times, his works show the tragic aspects of the Korean history such as the Japanese occupation period, the negative effects of Capitalism in South Korea, and the wound from the absurd society. This social consideration of his art works is ultimately extended to the existential matters called "life and death".

His Famous works such as Family portrait (1979-1981), Meditations of Forty Nine People (2004), and Bed couch (2008-2010) series gave a strong impression to many people. These representative works look very different in terms of the subjects and expression. However, they are so closely related each other, and it is important to understand their relations to appreciate his art world in general. In this respect, this exhibition intends to present from the early works of AHN to the new work The Age of Barbarism (2015) spanning nearly 40 years of the artist's career.
