The perspective a painter has of the works of his fellow painters is entirely unique and is certainly different from that of the gallerist or the museum director. Hartmut Neumann dares to show this perspective in the exhibition curated for Galerie Beck & Eggeling and Kunsthalle Recklinghausen, which carries the beautiful title The Secret of Things. Painted Pieces.
The word Malstücke (painted pieces) immediately evokes paintings of bygone periods. We can be fairly sure that no contemporary artist would consciously choose this term for his works today. And more gripping still is the secret of things, as it is the particular art of artists to paint a secret that indeed does not exist in this way in real life. In this exhibition we call upon everyone's honed viewing skills to discern painterly qualities, and we invite everyone to follow the path through the various interpretations of our subject and to discover his or her favourites.
