Located on the quiet historic Pound Lane in Sheung Wan, Hong Kong, Blue Lotus Gallery specialises in contemporary photography with a focus on exploring the culture and identity of Hong Kong.
Read MoreEstablished in 2007 by Belgium-born gallerist Sarah Greene, Blue Lotus Gallery presents images of old and new Hong Kong in exhibitions, books, limited editions, and vintage prints. The gallery also works with established and emerging photographic talents originating from Hong Kong.
Blue Lotus Gallery Artists
While retaining a focus on Hong Kong, Blue Lotus Gallery represents established and emerging photographers from both Hong Kong and overseas.
Its roster includes some of Hong Kong’s leading photographers, among them the estate of Fan Ho—the beloved ‘great master’ of Hong Kong street photography—which the gallery represents exclusively worldwide.
The gallery also represents younger Hong Kong talents such as Wing Shya, a director and photographer of dark brooding scenes and for whom the gallery is the sole agent internationally, and National Geographic award-winning photographer Tugo Cheng, whose aerial and long-distance photography documents visual rhythms in cityscapes and agriculturalised landscapes across China.
Blue Lotus Gallery has been a launching point for the careers of several emerging artists, such as Romain Jacquet-Lagrèze, a French émigré to Hong Kong, who documents the distinct cultural and social features of Hong Kong’s high-rise districts.
The gallery represents a sizeable foreign contingent of international photography masters, some of whom have settled in Hong Kong. Among them are photographers like the English-born documentary photographer Keith MacGregor, Canadian veteran travelling photographer Girard, and philosophically-inclined art photographer Michael Kenna—all of them have been drawn at various times to document old and new Hong Kong’s unique urban environment.
Blue Lotus Gallery Exhibitions and Art Fairs
Presenting a diverse sampling of Hong Kong and international photography, Blue Lotus Gallery holds several focused solo or duo exhibitions each year, accompanied by artist talks, book launches, and workshops.
The gallery’s duo shows often focus around a specific topic, such as Greg Girard & Ian Lambot’s City of Darkness (2019), which explored Hong Kong’s now historic crammed slum city of Kowloon.
Exhibitions at Blue Lotus Gallery are not exclusively Hong-Kong focused. Its first exhibition in the current Pound Lane space, From Abba to Zappa, presented famed Dutch photographer Gijsbert Hanekroot’s iconic photos of post-war 20th century rock stars.
Maintaining a presence on the international art and photography scene, Blue Lotus Gallery participates in major art fairs including Fine Art Asia, the Affordable Art Fair in Hong Kong, Fotofever Paris, and Taipei Dangdai.
