240 x 198 x 16 cm 94 1/2 x 77 15/16 x 6 5/16 inches Looking at the recent polychrome paintings by Jason Martin one journeys into something that begins on the surface, but which then pulls you in deeper and deeper, opening into an unfathomable space beyond. One reaches a surprising, almost figurative reality inside the painting, much like looking into a blazing fire, a seascape or ice.
Jason Martin’s large painting oscillates along the thin line between abstraction and representation, something which the artist has repeatedly fathomed and differentiated in various groups of works in recent years. In this painting Jason Martin uses a blue color palette in different hues and tones to create a painting of immense depth, space and physical presence. The nature of the non-representational painting constantly stimulates the viewer’s imagination, reminiscent of a seascape or sky.
