de Sarthe Gallery is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of new work by Double Fly Art Center, entitled The Bro Generation. Opening July 8th, 2017 the show will continue through September 10th, 2017.
Double Fly Art Center was established in 2008 by nine artists who all graduated from the China Academy of Art, Department of New Media Art in Hangzhou. Double Fly uses the title of 'Art Center' to organise and produce projects that are seemingly related to contemporary art. They specialise in a great variety of artistic media and formats: traditional ones including Chinese ink and sketch, and new ones including modern dance and 3D animation. While the members all maintain creation of their own individual works, they are nonetheless known for appearing together in all kinds of occasions, performing actions that are confusing or ironic from a public perspective. They keep their creativity extemporaneous, always acting according to the here and now, representing popular subjects in a manner that is both profound and exaggerated at the same time. The nine members currently live in various cities across China such as Hangzhou, Shanghai and Beijing.
The title of the exhibition The Bro Generation is a comment on the state of life for the current migrant generation in China, of which the members of Double Fly feel they belong. Unlike previous generations, the members of Double Fly, born after 1980, are all only children due to China's one-child policy. They experienced the transformation of Chinese society, and witnessed the rise of the Internet as well as a cultural opening. Along with this transformation came an increase in mobility for the population. This meant that after a short experience of collective life in schools, many Chinese began to travel for jobs or further education, thereby encountering new groups of people in new places. In this sense in particular, the members of Double Fly resemble the migrant workers who move from one construction site to another, living with people that are perceived as new 'brothers'.
