Hans Kooi Biography

Hans Kooi est né en 1948 aux Pays-Bas près du grand delta. C’est ici que dès son enfance l’artiste est marqué par les mouvements infinis de la nature. Il étudie à l’Académie des Arts Plastiques de Rotterdam. La sculpture devient alors son médium principal, d’abord avec un vocabulaire très construit puis plus organique. C’est insérant des aimants au sein de ses formes qu’un champ magnétique se crée entre elles, l’artiste crée un espace sensible qui interroge toutes notions de stabilité.

Ses sculptures se trouvent à la frontière entre la nature et les sciences techniques. En usant du magnétisme, Hans Kooi cherche quelque chose qui se trouve entre l’équilibre et la désorientation, l’attraction et la répulsion. C’est en cela que la tension des paysages fluviaux des Pays-Bas fait écho dans son œuvre.

Son travail est présent dans plusieurs collections publiques néerlandaises, mais aussi belges, norvégiennes, suisses et américaines. La galerie denise rené présente son travail pour la première fois en 1986, et représente son travail depuis/aujourd’hui.

Hans Kooi is born in 1948 in the Netherlands near the large delta. Since his young age, this where he’s marked about the infinity movement of the nature. He studies at the Art academy of Rotterdam. And the sculpture is by then his favourite medium, at first with a very geometrical langage and then a more organic one. By inserting a magnet in the shapes taht he’s creating, a magnetic field is created between them, the artist create a sensitive space which question the idea of stability.

His sculptures are at the border between nature and technical sciences. By using the magnétisme, Hans Kooi is searching for something between the balance and the disorientation, attraction and revulsion. And this is why the river landscapes tension of The Netherlands is echoing his work.

His work is present in several dutch public collection, but also belgian, norwegian, swiss and american. The Denise René gallery is showing his work for the first time in 1986 and present his work since then.
