How to Shrink L.A.
February 6, 2020
'Horns sounded from the trapped vehicles on the motorway, a despairing chorus.' In his notorious novel Crash, J. G. Ballard conjures a disturbing vision of the car as a nexus of technology, sex, and death. Such has been the influence of Ballard's text on contemporary artists that, in 2010, Gagosian's Britannia Street gallery presented an exhibition inspired by and titled after it. Now, Gagosian is pleased to participate in the second annual edition of Frieze Los Angeles with a presentation that explores the transformation of car culture from a metaphor for freedom and possibility to a symbol of violence and stagnation.
Taking Los Angeles's system of highways as a literal and figurative backdrop, the selection includes Richard Prince's full-scale car sculpture Untitled (2008) and Chris Burden's ominously oversize L.A.P.D. Uniform (1993).
The presentation includes works by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Chris Burden, John Chamberlain, Urs Fischer, Theaster Gates, Piero Golia, Alex Israel, Sally Mann, Adam McEwen, Cady Noland, Richard Prince, Sterling Ruby, Ed Ruscha, Taryn Simon, Robert Therrien, Andy Warhol, Tom Wesselmann, and others.
On the occasion of the fair, Gagosian will present its latest Online Viewing Room. Works by Chris Burden, Alex Israel & Bret Easton Ellis, Neil Jenney, Albert Oehlen, Chris Ofili, David Reed, Ed Ruscha, Bill Whiskey Tjapaltjarri, Tatiana Trouvé, and Jonas Wood will be available. Many of the artworks included in this virtual presentation also consider the political, geographical, and social landscapes of Los Angeles.
A live walkthrough of Richard Prince's current exhibition of New Portraits, led by the artist's studio manager Matt Gaughan, will take place on Saturday, February 15, at 2pm at Gagosian, Beverly Hills. To attend the free event, RSVP to [email protected].
