Gajah Galley is proud to announce its 3rd consecutive participation in Art Basel Hong Kong. This year, collectors can expect to view the region’s most exciting and progressive contemporary artists including important Bali based American artist Ashley Bickerton, well-known Malaysian artist Ahmad Zakii Anwar, leading Indonesian contemporary artist Yunizar, Ugo Untoro, Abdi Setiawan and Rudi Hedriantno. In addition, Gajah Gallery will also unveil its new portfolio of contemporary Chinese ink artists which notably includes world renowned artist Gu Wenda along with Li Jin, Gu Gan, Qiu Deshu, Wang Tiande and Wei Ligang.
In this installment, Ashley Bickerton will feature a work from his latest body of works, Junk Anthropologies, which marks a new direction for the American master of philosophical funk. Bickerton depicts vignettes from the tropical apocalypse, executed with a fine, finished polish. With this new series, he makes a conscious, almost defiant effort to re-establish himself as a, master painter in the grand tradition.
Ahmad Zakii Anwar, one of the most exciting, engaging and eloquent ‘urban realist’ artists in the region will exhibit two works from his much anticipated animal portrait series (an extension of his Tales from a Primordial Garden series). In his latest work, Zakii continues applying his distinct psychological dimension qualities in his depiction of simple animal portraits to stir within us memories of our primordial origins.
Leading Indonesian artist Yunizar will present his latest series of life-size bronze sculptures which capture the ever popular and fun loving nature of his paintings. This is a continuation from his bust series that debuted with much success at Art Stage Singapore at the beginning of the year. Yunizar’s take on this bronze series was reinterpreting the classical notion of bronze art and presenting it in a more contemporary fashion with his unmistakable scribbles and unrefined silhouette of his sculptures.
Ugo Untoro, who is considered a highly poetic artist, will exhibit two new works which re-examines his long fascination with the notion of good and evil. Both works are excellent representations of his emotionally charged style, often articulated with personal conversations with the canvas.
Indonesian wood sculptors Abdi Setiawan and Rudi Hendriatno will each exhibit a new work. The works are precursors to their two men exhibition at Gajah Gallery in July 2014. Rudi who captured the imagination of collectors at Art Stage Singapore, will once again thrill audiences with his kinetic wood sculpture.
Gajah Gallery will present works from Gu Wenda’s Pseudo: Misplaced Characters and Mythos of Lost Dynasties series which the artist process and deconstructs traditional culture with new works concepts, by dismantling words. Gu challenges the historical rules, political logic, and knowledge therein a kind of analytical linguistic philosophy that draws inspiration from Wittgenstein ideas on logic and language.
Highly sought after Chinese ink artist, Li Jin, whose works exposes the flawed human figure with his witty and humorous ink paintings, will also be featured as part of our Gajah Gallery’s Chinese ink section.
