The paintings of Romanian-born artist, Iulia Nistor allude to the seemingly hidden and undefined, ultimately having as subject the method of their making. She follows a tenaciously developed procedure that consists of overlapping various layers of paint and repeatedly removing them.

Her painting process is a process of excavation–subtracting from the image either by taking away parts of the still wet colour with paper pressings or if in a dry state, sanding or scrapping it off. As a result, the leftover fragments of multiple layers sediment and forge a ground from which signifying gestures and forms emerge.
Iulia Nistor (1985, Bucharest) lives and works in Berlin, Germany.
