Cheung Yee Biography

Cheung Yee was born in Guangzhou, China in 1936 and graduated from the Taiwan Normal University in 1958. Cheung Yee is one of the most renowned sculptors from Hong Kong, his most iconic works include his paper castings, bronze relief, wood, stone and bronze sculptures. In 1963, Cheung Yee co-founded the avant-garde Circle Art Group with fellow artists such as Van Lau and Hon Chi Fun. In 1964, he held his first solo exhibition at the City Museum and Art Gallery at Hong Kong City Hall and received a grant from the Institute of International Education to study abroad in the US and Europe in the following year. From 1984 to 1992, Cheung served as the Chairman of the Department of Fine Arts at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. His works have been exhibited across the world, including the Hong Kong Museum of Art (1978, 1993); Pacific Heritage Museum of San Francisco, United States (1978), Taipei Lion Gallery, Taiwan (1985, 1988), Galerie du Monde, Hong Kong (1988, 1994, 2005, 2019). His works are in many institutional collections including: Hong Kong Museum of Art, Hong Kong; National Museum of History, Taiwan; Taipei Museum of Art, Taiwan; Taiwan Museum of Art, Taiwan; Museum of Modern Art, Mexico City.
