Carsten Nicolai uses electronic sound and visual art as a kind of hybrid-tool to create his own microscopic view of creative processes. His world looks more like a laboratory-constantly morphing in space and time, influenced by the impulses of this media world, sound-the message as a code-becomes, the primary theme via visualised sound performance.
Carsten Nicolai participated at the Documenta X. in 1997. Installations of the Berlin based artist have been presented in 2005 by numerous institutions, for example at the Yamaguchi Center for Visual Arts and Media in Japan, the SMAK in Gent, the Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt am Main and the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin. On the occasion of his solo exhibition at the Haus Konstruktiv he received the Zürich-Prize of the city of Zurich in 2007. In the same year he was a Scholarship holder at the Villa Massimo in Rome. 2008 the Hamburger Kunsthalle presented Carsten Nicolai at the Galerie der Gegenwart with a solo exhibition.
