Gallery 9 is proud to present the second solo exhibition, Squaring the Circle. by New Zealand Artist, Kāryn Taylor which opens on 17 June 2021 and continues to 10 July 2021.
The expression "squaring the circle" is sometimes used as a metaphor for trying to do the impossible. It comes from the challenge of trying to construct a square with the same area as a given circle by using a finite number of steps. This proved to be impossible when pi (π) was found to be a transcendental number and therefore only an approximate answer could be found for the problem.
One of Kāryn Taylor's interests informing her work is the seeming impossibility of science to answer questions about reality in a finite and logical way. Taylor uses geometric abstraction to create a simplified, logical language in order to express complicated and illogical notions. Taylor believes that geometry, light and colour have clear energetic structures with embedded coding that hold information about the nature of reality.
