Hauser & Wirth's presentation at Art Basel Miami Beach 2019 features seminal works by the late American masters Ed Clark, Philip Guston, John Chamberlain, and Jack Whitten. Through their paintings and sculptures, the booth explores the impact these artists have had upon the course of modern art and affirms their enduring relevance today. Works by these four canonical figures are complemented by significant contributions from leading contemporary artists from the gallery's program, including Charles Gaines and Rita Ackermann.
The booth will also feature major new paintings by Nicole Eisenman and Nicolas Party-the gallery's first presentation of two artists who have recently joined Hauser & Wirth. Among other highlights are Untitled (Silver Tapestry) (2008), a tarp painting by David Hammons, and Mama Safe Crossing (2019), a new work by Rita Ackermann.
In addition, the booth will present an important gridwork by noted American artist and educator Charles Gaines. This unique portrait of French theorist Luce Irigaray is part of the artist's 'Identity Politics' series comprising portraits of philosophers and politicians cited by Gaines as key inspirations.
Further highlights include a rare work from the Günther Förg's 'Lead Painting' series and the large-scale sculpture CUPCAKECUTIE (2018) by John Chamberlain. I Love You, You Love Me is a late work by Louise Bourgeois that brings together the conceptual and stylistic complexity of the celebrated artist's oeuvre, playing upon the powers of association, memory, fantasy, and fear. Philip Guston's figurative painting Sunrise (1979) exemplifies the mastery of this American icon's complex practice. In Guston's signature palette of uneasy pastels, the rising-or setting-sun and circle motif in this painting are classic examples of imagery that emerged and repeated in the artist's work during the last decade of his life.
Hauser & Wirth's booth at the fair will be complemented by its first iteration of an Artist Choice Online Viewing Room, here featuring Rashid Johnson, whose exhibition The Hikers is on view through January 2020 in the gallery's West Chelsea space in New York City. This online presentation of ceramic vessel sculptures highlights Johnson's increasing interest in exploring the materiality of clay. Fifty percent of the proceeds from the purchase of these works online will be given to Prep for Prep, a non-profit organisation founded in 1978 to 'develop ethical and effective leaders who reflect our diverse society for the enduring benefit of all.'
