HdM GALLERY presents an exhibition of Barthélémy Toguo in conversation with Stephen Webster at their Mount Street Salon. The works are presented alongside Stephen Webster's newest collection Thorn Embrace.
Barthélémy Toguo creates works with a very simple aesthetic that liberate the imagination and the dream that the colonisation that marked his land has worked to destroy. Combining human and animal figures, elements of nature and the body, earth, flesh and water, Barthélémy Toguo's works can be seen as omens, of a forgotten past that is nevertheless very present around and within us.
The works presented in this exhibition include the 'Devil's Head' series, whose ambivalence between fear and fascination are characteristic of Barthélémy Toguo's dialectic. 'Devil's Head' proceeds to a total reversal of values: by illustrating a violence present in our societies that has become invisible, intrinsic, systematic.
