The unique and delicate narrative in Lu Chao's works is largely influenced by Chinese classic aesthetics as well as Dutch art. By combining the aspect of ink paintings, which is the aesthetic pinnacle of Eastern philosophy, with Western oil painting techniques, another aesthetic system derived from the cannon of Western art history, Lu Chao explores his own 'fiction' with two contradictory, uneven languages, and creates a world full of fables and legends.
The 'Relic', 'Laboratory', 'Cake' and 'Funambulist' series, on which Lu Chao has been working in recent years, will all be displayed in the exhibition; at the same time, the 'Tears for War' and 'Animal' series will also be shown; these new works on paper express the artist' more intense interest in, and compassion for, humanity. If the use of the colour 'black' has been more a product of Lu Chao's personal preference and instinct in the past ten years, his insistent choice of 'black' during this current period is actually more suggestive and topical. Black Star is Lu Chao's response to our event-heavy time.
Lu Chao (b. 1988, Shenyang, China) is a graduate of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, and the Royal College of Art, London. He lives and works in London.
