Informality is excited to share Symbiosis. Informality's introductory group exhibition bringing together a collection of international artists focusing on our shared ethos of co-existence and the environment. The exhibition will present works exploring a variety of mediums spanning photography, painting and video. The included works will explore the artists' co-existing, physical associations and interests in the world around them.
Symbiosis describes a close relationship between two contrasting organ- isms. This can be seen to relate to the connection between an artist and their work, how one may mutually benefit the other.
The exhibition brings together selected and unseen works from artists that are supported in Informality's programme, and with some, the first exposure in the UK, artists include, Todd McMillan, Diane Chappalley, Anthony Hodgkinson, Giles Alexander, Nejat Sati, Gria Shead, Brooke Holm and Eiko Soga.
Artist, Eiko Soga's Personal Space and Borders (2017), filmed in the Welsh countryside is a humorous document of subjective walking ex- periences, by observing a process of physical sense, spoken word and communication with the locals exploring how this affected the artists understanding of geography. Other works in the exhibition, Brooke Holm's Sand Sea V, and renowned Turkish artist, Najat Sati's Wildflowers share an abstract narrative visual exploring forms of colour to sink into the subconscious. The abstracted flora of Wildflowers explores the personalities of the plant that is in most circumstances able to thrive without the need for further interaction nor the need for humans to coexist within their ecosystem.
Australian artist, Todd McMillan's Cloud Studies continue to explore from his recent Sydney show titled, Preparations for Rain (2018), watercolours are mounted onto board and deepened with a surface delicately coated with epoxy resin. McMillan's Cloud Studies are con- temporary, melancholic abstractions, and poetic references turning to the sky. Similarly, Anthony Hodgkinson's analogue photographs, When Light Leaves, The Dark Sees (2018) share a romantic vision for our love of the sky.
Symbiosis is an exhibition in which brings the viewers peripherals back into focus. The exhibition provides us through selected works a feeling among a facade world interrupted by the likes of technology and invaluable overuse of imagery, instead, each artist chooses to respond to the entirety of our environment exploring the mutualism of inter- specific interactions.
