Sanjay Theodore's new exhibition as its title suggests, offers a compendium, a personal take on the different tropes that constitute modern painting. So with typical wit and deftness of touch, we have Sanjay's re-presentation of abstraction, figuration and the found - right down to Rorschach bookcover works offering false science and the ability to make of this what you can, as the basis for it all.
Sanjay's promise is considerable, but very considered too. The faux naïve gravitas of the installation is serious fun, whilst the depths of field explored between dots and grids in the paintings are equally playful. In these Modern Paintings, form is variously brushed, scrawled, scored and gilded, with marks metallic and not, varying in density and shimmering against dark atmospheric grounds. The effect is glorious - a little bit of Persia and western modernism meeting in the miniature.
