ASSISTED, curated by Jessica Stockholder, follows on two earlier related ventures and accompanies her solo exhibition titled Door Hinges at Kavi Gupta in Chicago this September. The first project, Table Top Sculpture, included works by other artists at Jay Gorney Modern Art in 2003 in a curated seating area placed at the entryway to the gallery. The second was The Jewel Thief, curated collaboratively by Stockholder and Ian Berry at the Tang Museum in 2010, the work of over 60 artists intersected with the means of display and blurred the lines between artworks and pedestals, wall coverings, floor coverings, and lighting.
ASSISTED highlights a select grouping of artists that are interested in the potential of alternative exhibition modalities. The group exhibition is integrated into the solo exhibition with works appearing both independently and on Assists, a new body of work by Stockholder which are interstitial; acting as both sculpture and hardware, adjuncts to furniture or walls, and as plinths for other works. ASSISTED creates a kind of visual community of artists invested in a particular way of investigating form and objecthood.
ASSISTED is presented in conjunction with Door Hinges, a solo exhibition of new work by Jessica Stockholder.
