Established in 2002 by its namesake gallerist, Kavi Gupta first opened in Chicago’s West Loop and now operates two distinct exhibition locations in the former industrial district. In 2008, having become well established in Chicago, the gallery opened its European outpost in Schöneberg, Berlin.
Kavi Gupta Artists
Kavi Gupta represents a range of artists from Chicago, other parts of the United States, and overseas who are making themselves known on the international art scene.
The gallery represents established Chicago artists such as Patrick Chamberlain, who carries certain marks and materials across various styles of painting, abstract and figurative; Jae Jarrell and Wadsworth Jarrell, co-founders of the influential Chicago-based African American artists group AfriCOBRA; and the estate of Roger Brown, an American painter known internationally for his shrewd socio-political commentaries expressed with a Pop Art aesthetic.
They are presented alongside other American artists including Mickalene Thomas, known for her rhinestone, acrylic, and enamel paintings that explore the complex notions of beauty and female identity; Jeffrey Gibson, who combines his Native American traditions with visual aspects of Modernism, and Puerto Rico-born maker of process-based paintings and sculpture, Angel Otero.
Also on the gallery’s roster are young international artists like Swedish musically-inspired, conceptual film-maker Johanna Billing; Manish Nai, a Mumbai-based visual artist working with modest materials such as newspaper and Jute; and Haitian-born Canadian artist Manuel Mathieu, who combines abstract and figurative techniques to explore avenues of cultural identity and context.
Supporting projects beyond the conventional gallery space, Kavi Gupta gallery also represents several sculptors in the field of public art such as Richard Hunt, Jessica Stockholder, Tony Tasset, and Roxy Paine.
