Agnes Maes (1942 - 2016) would have turned eighty this year. As a gallery owner and son of, we pay a proper tribute to this still highly underrated Belgian painter.
The exhibition shows a selection of the numerous paintings made by Agnes Maes during the period 1993–2014. The chosen spaces and landscapes feel somewhat desolate and alienating. There is not a living soul in sight. The paintings evoke in the viewer a kind of existential, spatial experience, with potentially high emotional impact. The transparent screen, which appears in many of these paintings, is literally in between the imagined and perceived space, transparent and concealing at the same time. Is it the experienced space? The very personal use of colour, the sensitive, intuitive brushstroke, and the lush, palpable light make Agnes Maes' paintings extremely sensual.
