Reversed Spectrum: The Abstract Century of Chinese on the Island
Liang Gallery is set to participate in the 2024 Art Basel Hong Kong, curating an exhibition that explores the masters of Taiwanese art history and post-World War II Chinese abstract art. Starting from the Japanese colonial period in the 1920s, the exhibition will feature the most representative works of Chen Cheng-Po and Kuo Hsueh-Hu. Both artists, not only honored in the Teikoku Bijutsu Tenrankai and the Taiwan Fine Arts Exhibition, but also actively engaged in the art scenes of China, Japan, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia. They depicted the landscapes and cultural characteristics of Taiwan from the 1920s to 1947, laying the foundation for Taiwanese fine art.
The post-World War II avant-garde movements from Europe and the United States continued to influence artists like SHIY De-Jinn, a graduate of the Hangzhou Art College, mentored by elite artists including LIN Fon-Ming. Inspired by Western artistic concepts, JINN's exhibited works will showcase his depictions of Taiwanese local landscapes. HSIAO Chin, educated by avant-garde artist LI Chun Shan, co-founded the first abstract painting group in Taiwan, the "Eastern Painting Association," in 1955. In 1961, he initiated the "Ponto International Art Movement" with Italian contemporary artists, emphasizing the spiritual mission of Eastern philosophy in art creation, making him a pioneer in the European art scene for Chinese artists. Chu Ko, a poet, painter, art critic, and historian, served as an expert in bronze artifacts at the National Palace Museum for over 30 years. He integrated the totemic symbols of Chinese cord culture into calligraphy and poetry, earning the title of the "revolutionary of modern ink art." Lee Chong-Chong, over half a century later, has established a unique position in post-war modern abstract ink art in Taiwan, focusing on ink application and automatic techniques. Artist Aluaiy KAUMAKAN, skilled in weaving through wire materials, outlines ancient totems and spiritual beliefs of Taiwan's indigenous society. She has gained international attention and recently participated in the 2023 Summer Annual Exhibition at Hayward Gallery, Southbank Centre, London.
These seven artists, each with their own distinctive creative language, radiate the spectrum of contemporary Chinese art, showcasing the context of Taiwan and Asian art development. We sincerely invite you to visit the exhibition in person and witness these outstanding works.
