Georgetti’s paintings may at first glance appear abstract but at their core is a personal element which Georgetti strives to communicate to both herself and the viewer.

Just how all pervasive this is, is evidenced in her working process: "In making these paintings a desperation is felt. In starting there is a yes, yes. Days pass, and disappointment begins. The painting isn’t as you need it to be. I take it with me through my day, and night life. I set it in the bathroom while I bathe. I arrange it amongst my interior furnishings, and invite social events for it to be present at. I look for it in the glow of the TV. I catch it in the mirror, all the while telling myself, ‘If you catch it unguarded, and you like it, it’s good. It’s a good painting.’ I continue testing it like this until it proves to indeed be a construction made of everyday activity, design, thought, object of the situation. If I am forced to cry in that time and the painting comforts me, it has passed and will survive. If it fails to comfort, it mocks, and will be destroyed". In 2008 her work was the subject of a major touring survey exhibition, Diena Georgetti – The Humanity of Abstract Painting, 1988-2008, at Monash University Museum of Art, Clayton Campus, Melbourne, and Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane, Australia. Her works have featured in museum exhibitions such as the 2010 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art: Before and After Science, Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide; Cubism and Australian Art, Heide Museum of Modern Art, Melbourne (2009); Lost & Found: An Archaeology of the Present TarraWarra Biennial, Victoria (2008); 21st Century Modern - 2006 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art at the Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide; Makeover, Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, New Plymouth, New Zealand, 2005; Australian Perspecta 1995, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney; and The Boundary Rider, 9th Biennale of Sydney, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, 1992.
