Located in Munich’s culturally rich, museum-filled Maxvorstadt, Micheko Galerie presents 20th and 21st century Japanese art and contemporary jewellery art for sale to an international audience. With a programme that encompasses different forms of fine arts and Japanese applied arts, Micheko Galerie’s roster is diverse. The gallery’s careful selection criteria emphasises concept and technique, as well as context, continuity, and future potential.
Micheko Galerie represents contemporary artists whose practices span the late-20th and 21st centuries. Among them, Tokihiro Sato is a celebrated photographer who uses long exposures to experiment with light and space; Kayoko Mizumoto is a traditional ceramicist who creates surrealistic objects in a contemporary Kutani style; and Hiroshi Watanabe who is a is a globe-trotting photographer. The gallery also works with younger artists including Ai Kijima, whose pop-culture-inspired and collaged fabric quilts exaggerate gender codes, nationalism, and violence in popular cartoons to discomforting extremes, and Tokyo based artist Keita Sagaki who recreates famous masterworks from all stages in art history as ink drawings using manga inspired figures.
Micheko Galerie Exhibitions and Art Fairs
Highlighting new perspectives and positions on Japanese art, Micheko Galerie holds numerous group and solo exhibitions each year. The group show Spring is in the Air (2020) explored the various contemporary approaches to the uniquely Japanese subject of cherry blossom season. In 2019, traditional Japanese porcelain received a refreshing examination in the two-person show New Kutani – Contemporary Kutani Ceramics.
Presenting Japanese contemporary art to a wider audience, Micheko Galerie participates in Art Stage Singapore, Fotofever Paris,Paper Positions Basel, and Art Busan, among others.
