ONE AND J. Gallery is pleased to announce its participation in Art Basel Hong Kong 2019.
The gallery will present the works of Bob Kil, Suyoung Kim and Nikki S. Lee.
Bob Kil’s practice centers on the original text work and creation of counterparts in installation and performance. Kil will present new flag works plainly depicting different egg dishes hung within the booth. Eggs are an integral component of different species and may insinuate the beginning of a day or a component of life’s beginning. While the interaction of her flags may seem incongruous, the desire to assimilate and interact within the space creates an interesting communication.
Suyoung Kim creates paintings of buildings with their repetitive reflections and colours creating abstracted works. While Kim emphasizes the geometric elements of buildings, the works are unique in their lack of proper perspective, the flatness and the focus on material properties of paint. The results are experiments on the relationship of time and objects as well as the boundaries between the abstract and figurative. The interaction with the viewer reveal the relationship between the space and the gaze and the psychological depictions within.
Nikki S. Lee’s Layers series of works offer diverse cultural interpretations of the artist’s countenance. Charcoal drawings of the Lee made by local artists in different cities are layered over each other on a light table and photographed. Despite the subject being the same person, the blurred lines and luminous images are the unique result of the drawings reflecting the culture of the society as it reacts to this foreign women as much as how the different surroundings influence the subject herself.
