Auckland based artist Karl Maughan studied painting at Elam School of Fine Arts, Auckland, which he completed in 1987. On moving to London where he worked between 1994 to 2005, Maughan enjoyed considerable success, with his work attained by both the Charles Saatchi collection and the Arts Council of England. Gardening parents appear to be the source of Maughan’s choice of floral subject matter; however, his luxuriant canvases are more concerned with the expression of colour and light than with the subject of flowers themselves. Maughan’s works are painted in oil, often on a huge scale, with small painterly brush strokes. The result is work that moves between the technical virtuosity of the super realists and the tactile pleasures of expressionism.
