Pearl Lam Galleries' stand in the prestigious Galleries sector of the show will feature artworks by important international artists including American artists Robert Motherwell (b. 1915-d. 1991) and Leonardo Drew (b. 1961); British artists Antony Micallef (b. 1975) and Peter Peri (b. 1971); Brazilian artist José PatrÃcio (b. 1960); Chinese artists Su Xiaobai (b. 1949), Zhou Yangming (b. 1971), and Zhu Jinshi (b. 1954); and Korean artists Chun Kwang Young (b. 1944) and Hoon Kwak (b. 1941);
Following his recent dual-space exhibition at both of Pearl Lam Galleries' Hong Kong galleries, Robert Motherwell's giant painting Dover Beach No. III will be presented at the stand. Motherwell was the youngest member and unofficial spokesman of the Abstract Expressionists, the first internationally influential American art movement. His profound contribution to contemporary art history situates Motherwell as a notable yet under-recognised figure in the Western canon. As an exploration of space and subjectivity, the Open series investigates the artist's belief in Zen philosophy and artistic roots in surrealist automatism.
The Galleries will also exhibit three new pieces by Antony Micallef, featuring the artist's visually charged figures that explore the relationships of the mechanics of artistic intent, representation, and emotion expression. Awarded second prize by the BP Portrait Award in 2000, Micallef has received international acknowledgement for his unique use of the impasto technique that pushes the paint to its extreme and blurs viewers' perceptions of painting and sculpture. Another highlight at the stand are two works by Peter Peri that depict the artist's fascination with the intersection between lines that form a cross and their ability to become a paradoxical point where unity and division coexist. Martin Herbert, art critic of Artforum and Frieze, states, 'Peri's artworks suggest, but never reduce themselves to an externalised entity, an embodied intelligence that stands in confrontation with the viewer, even when the work is seemingly near-abstract.
Artworks by Chinese artists Su Xiaobai and Zhu Jinshi will be exhibited at the stand. This year, newly created pieces by the two artists continue to further their artistic practices. By applying colours on linen; polishing layers of lacquer; and introducing subtle undulations, light, shadows, depth of texture, tactile sensations, and movement into the artworks, Su has elevated his materials from something with a practical use to the embodiment of a meditative state. Zhu's approach to abstraction is linked to Chinese ink painting, where the mind must be empty and the artist's hands connected to heaven, earth, and heart to manifest the work. The artist must be meditative to connect and make the strokes in a state of tian di ren, 'the ultimate peace in the unity of the three (heaven, earth and man) in one'.
