Born in Nanjing in 1946, Jiang Dahai is one of the most prominent contemporary Chinese artists. Jiang graduated from China Central Academy of Fine Arts with a master degree in oil painting in 1986. The same year he moved to Paris and started adopting Western creative practices, mixing East and West in his art, finally staying in France for two decades. Jiang belongs to the third generation of Chinese artists who have settled in France. Six years ago he moved back to China, and now lives and works in Beijing.

His cloudy painting is created through an abstract stippling technique as the theme-give the illusion of blurred and vaporous mists. Jiang’s work expresses a historical nostalgia that recalls traditional Chinese landscape paintings of Five Dynasties and Northern and Southern Song periods.
Jiang Dahai has created his own artistic language that developed from the hubbub of contemporary Chinese art in the 90’s. Jiang is applying strong points of Chinese instinct to Western ideolody, making his work a reflection of several Western abstraction currents, evoking aesthetics of Chinese landscape painting, Minimalism and Rothko artistic blend.
