PKM Gallery proudly presents selected artworks by renowned artists who represent Korean modern and contemporary art and accomplished artists who lead the international art scene. For Korean artists, paintings by Yun Hyong-keun whose works are the focal point of Dansaekhwa movement, and 'Tak' paper works by Chung Chang-Sup, who is also part of the first generation of Dansaekhwa like Yun and combines the echoes of Western abstraction and East-Asian painting, will be displayed at Frieze Seoul. Among the masters representing Korean Art in the late 20th century, the booth sheds light on the past and the present works in Korean Art by introducing multi-media works by Koo Jeong A, a young artist who leads the Korean contemporary art scene and is recognised internationally for her unique agility, paintings by Young Do Jeong who interprets human's intuitive experience as his own icon through psychoanalytic interpretation, and lastly paintings by Bek Hyunjin which have been carried out on impulse by moving his body to the rhythm of action. For international artists, paintings and sculptures by Olafur Eliasson who has taken an active part in the international stage with quasi-scientific artworks which are inspired from nature, and paintings by Peppi Bottrop who depict time and space of the history which the artist had encountered based on his experiences and recollection using brittle and black materials such as graphite, charcoal, and coal, will be presented together.
In addition to the aforementioned artists who represent modern and contemporary Korean art and other major international artists, PKM Gallery will be showcasing works by young artists, who are leading the contemporary Korean art scene, and prominent foreign artists at Kiaf Seoul. Works by Wonwoo Lee, who evokes daily life with humour and irony, paintings by Young Do Jeong that unravel human intuitive experiences into his own icons through psychoanalytic interpretation, sculptures by Koo Hyunmo that have been noted for their delicate aesthetics and poetic resonance, and paintings by Bek Hyunjin, which were created spontaneously in the rhythm of his movement, shed light on the current scene of Korean art and its past. Furthermore, works by Darren Almond, who has lyrically woven the themes of time, landscape, and memory through various media of contemporary art as well as works of artists who are active in the global art stage and are leading the Korean modern and contemporary art scene will be presented.
PKM Gallery will be presenting global pionner of digital art Cody Choi's NFT work, 1999 DATABASE PAINTING SERIES 1 – STOLEN DATA, ANIMAL TOTEM, Tiger #00 (1999) at Kiaf's special exhibition at the Incheon International Airport. From the late 1990s, Cody Choi began to ask questions about the newly created world fused by the accumulation, expansion, and overlap of databases in the digital space with an insight that was ahead of its time. In the paintings that are based on the database, creation is not based on the artist's pure imagination, but rather a new painting is created by moving the foundation to the computer database, which existed before the artist's choice. Digital creative components are not native and sourced purely from the database, independent of the individual's imagination. As such, the artist recognised that the essence of digital technology lies in the creation of new values through data processing, and created the image files through the accumulation and expansion of data, which he practiced long before the blockchain technology came out. Therefore, Cody Choi's database painting series that are presented in this exhibition is the result of the behavioural practice of the concept of 'digital culture creation,' which was ahead of its era, and allows the audience to contemplate on NFT art.
