Lise Sarfati received her Master's Degree in Russian Studies from the Sorbonne in 1979. She made picture taking her career after working as the official photographer for the Acadamie des Beaux Arts in Paris. Sarfati received grants from the Fiacre Ministère de la Culture, Paris, and Villa Médicis Hors les Murs in the 1980's. From 1989 to 1998 Sarfati lived in Russia, doing documentary photography, some of which laid the groundwork for her later interest in focusing on the lives of young adults. In 1997 she joined Magnum Photos and became a full member in 2001.
