Belgium-born Fabienne Francotte moved to Sri Lanka in 2016. Her visual documentation of her experiences in the island were obsessively and meticulously maintained in her diaries. Her works combine social, emotional and spiritual experiences; the vivid narrative of an expatriate, teacher and observer. Francotte's practice began 17 years ago while studying calligraphy at Maison du Livre in Brussels. The careful composition of writing demanded a strict, ritualistic approach built on strong gesture and balance. This discipline, along with the rigor of a decade spent at the Royal Conservatory of Dance in Brussels under Maurice Béjart, became the foundation of her artistic language. Often inspired by the people she meets Fabienne Francotte interprets the chaos of the human condition, unrehearsed.
