Silverlens New York is pleased to present Shrines, a group exhibition opening June 22, 2023, featuring works by Filipino and Filipino diaspora artists Catalina Africa, Poklong Anading, Santiago Bose, Stephanie Comilang, Chati Coronel, Kawayan de Guia, Patricia Perez Eustaquio, Lani Maestro, Wawi Navarroza, Gina Osterloh, Gary-Ross Pastrana, Norberto Roldan, Judy Freya Sibayan, Carlos Villa, Ryan Villamael, and Eric Zamuco.
Shrines invites sixteen artists to showcase their unique interpretations of what a shrine can be, encompassing various forms that evoke references to environments, symbols, honor, and remembrance. These shrines serve as portals for individuals attuned to the interconnectedness of human and non-human ecologies. A young Filipina artist, Catalina Africa, shared her recent revelation stating, "I wanted to create a portal, and I found out that I'm a portal." Shrines are regarded as places for spirits to gather and find solace. Although these energies remain imperceptible to human eyes, we construct countless personal and collective shrines. The participating artists will showcase paintings, drawings, photographs and sculptures that resonate with the concept of shrines, influenced by their individual artistic approaches. The focus lies not on cultural purity or authenticity, but rather on embracing hybridity and imagination in cultural transformation. Embrace myths, facts, and artifacts, and blend them together to forge new creative offerings.
