Singapore Tyler Print Institute will be showing at Art Basel Miami Beach, with artworks by Eko Nugroho, Richard Deacon, Ghada Amer & Reza Farkhondeh, Ashley Bickerton, Teresita Fernández, and Song-Ming Ang.
Eko Nugroho is in the international art limelight with high-profile exhibitions including the 55th Venice Biennale and the 2013 California-Pacific Triennial at the Orange County Museum of Art, and was voted as ’50 under 50 Most Collectible Artists’ by New York’s Art+Auction magazine in June 2013. Broadly influenced by the sights, sounds and quirks of Singapore, Eko fashioned vibrant and quirky assemblages in his enduring investigation of the self, social constructs, and human behavior under conditions of concealed identity.
Audiences familiar with the wood, galvanized steel or glazed ceramic sculptures of imminent British sculptor Richard Deacon will discover novel works by the artist in print and paper. The Housing series of imposing columns of marbled paper derives its name from the public housing projects that dominate the Singapore landscape, while simultaneously marking a milestone in Deacon’s impressive career. While his studio works typically command 5-figure sums, this unique collaboration offers visitors accessible wall pieces by the luminary artist.
Egyptian-born artist, Ghada Amer, who lives and works in New York City, has made a name for herself with controversial work of exquisitely embroidered pieces exploring female sexuality. Together in 2008 with Iranian artist Reza Farkhondeh, they produced fine works on paper challenging accustomed cultural and geo-political perceptions.
An influential figure in New York’s East Village scene, Ashley Bickerton’s works from STPI residency are revolutionary in the use of paper as an artistic medium. His manipulation of paper pulp to create paper casts resembling craters and caverns, are metaphors of human existence on earth. Bickerton’s works produced with STPI were shown for the very first time at the Armory Show in 2006 and made it to the cover of New York Times during the fair.
Singaporean artist Song-Ming Ang debuts at Art Basel Miami Beach Film with the work Be True to Your School (2010), which captures on video former students of a Japanese elementary school attempting to remember and sing their school song – unrehearsed and many decades after graduation. Shown as a single channel video, this work examines the poignant and face-saving results of each individual, concluding with intriguing results. Based in Berlin, Ang has exhibited at the Kunstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin (2013), Singapore Art Museum (2012) and the 3rd Singapore Biennale (2011) among others. The work will be shown at the film pods on fair grounds.
Teresita Fernández creates artworks of profound visual power and intellectual rigour, often exploring the complex relationships between perception and the psychology of looking. Her new body of works with STPI, ‘Night Writing’ evokes the dramatic experience of looking at the night sky for information. These were well received by critics and collectors when it made its American debut at the Armory Show last year.
