Studio Gallery is delighted to present Zhang Yangbiao's Solo Exhibition COOL COLOR with the opening reception on 17th July 2021. This exhibition will be the artist's 3rd solo show at Studio Gallery, this time we will present particularly his recent large-scale painting series.
Zhang Yangbiao likes to watch the daily rhythms of life in a trance. To be entranced is to be attracted to something's nature subconsciously; in staring, one's mind is connected to the outside world with an almost magnetic force, revealing the beauty of everyday objects that is usually ignored. In his works, we can always find arbitrary objects like glasses, plastic basins or lighters. These objects have a transparent or glossy texture and despite their ordinariness, they reflect a beautiful halo of light with colour.
For Zhang, through the simplest subject, one can create a rich effect in a painting. In this series of new works, he uses airbrush to present a delicate, soft but highly layered effect on the canvas with a plaster base. The daily trivialities thus seem to have a poetic beauty. The images appear out of focus and beckon the viewer to take a step closer.
The objects are extended and enlarged in Zhang's paintings and, in this way, they are divorced from daily life. Instead, every detail becomes an abstract analysis by the artist. In the artist's point of view, the objective concept of 'colour' does not exist; instead, 'colour' is a subjective personal feeling. Sometimes colour itself is enough to be a motif of creation. Beginning with a beautiful colour eventually blooms into the observation of an object. The rich colour and light effect presented on the canvas is an unconscious decision during painting, also a subjective aesthetic choice during deliberation. With careful consideration of the texture and the colour, Zhang's painting has an atmosphere of quietness and control, yet an effect of infinite tension. What the artist presents is no longer the object itself, but his current feeling and state. In this exhibition, we will also present a group of small-scale oil paintings and watercolour works, inviting the spectators to experience the artist's understanding and expression of still-life in different mediums.
'The beauty and harmony of colour', is the simple but sincere pursuit of the artist in painting. It is also humanity's most primitive perception of the image. Zhang presents the purest observation of the world around him, without complex context or deep meaning. The 'cool colour' on the painting, is an attractive colour, and gives a rich effect. It can also be an extent of colour, or the natural exclamation, 'Cool colour'.
