Drawing on historical and literary motifs of tragedy, isolation and loss, Karen Black's paintings hover between figurations and painterly gesture. Infused with its often dystopian subject, the painted canvas becomes politicised with events and incidents that subvert their material status. The visceral application of paint is equally evocative of the mythology and symbolism Black utilises.
Read MoreBlack graduated from Griffith University in 2011. She has exhibited throughout Australia and New Zealand. She has also been the recipient of a number of awards including the Belle Arti Prize, 2014, and the Art and Australia/Credit Suisse Private Banking Contemporary Art Award.
